What is the Hive Awards ?

The Hive awards is designed to reward the "unsung heros of the internet "- all the people who work behind the scenes to make the best stuff on the web. We are also looking to reward people who have done great work in non-sexy categories because these categories (basically anything outside the entertainment and sports industries) tend to get overlooked when awards are handed out.

Who Runs The Hive Awards?

The Hive Awards are owned by the International Award Group, an organization that has been organizing and running creative award shows for the past 50 years. Alan Wolk, a noted blogger and digital strategy consultant is the Executive director and driving forces behind Hive Awards.

What is the meaning of the name "Hive Awards?"

The name Hive Awards refers to the “hive mind” mentality of the web. We believe that the constant collaboration needed on projects is a real change from previous ways of working. It’s why we’re rewarding the unsung heroes of the internet, since with so many people working on a project, it’s easy for someone to get overlooked. Our goal is to change that.

Who Can Enter?

The Hive Awards are open to anyone: individuals and corporations. If you’ve been a part of any web-related project, you are eligible. There are 22 categories you can enter in. All we ask is that your project be available online for our judges to view.

How (And When) Do I Submit My JPGs?

At present the system works like this: Once your entry is complete and submitted for payment, you'll receive an email that contains a link to a site where you can upload your jpgs so that they're included with your entry. The email contains step-by-step instructions on how to do this. We are working on a system that allows you to upload your files directly from the entry form and should have it in place shortly. Remember: you can only upload three single-page jpgs. Anything longer will be discarded.

My Work Is Confidential: What Can I Do?

Contact the Hive Awards and we will send you an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) that will ensure your work remains confidential. All our judges have signed NDAs as well, so no worries there. If your entry requires a user name and password, you'll be able to provide us with one during the entry process.

My App Costs $500. Is That A Problem?

It’s not a problem if you provide us a copy of it for evaluation purposes. Most entrants provide us with a special download site or special “free” code. We promise to use the free app for judging purposes only. (In other words, if we really like it, we’ll buy our own full-price version.)

What Forms of Payment Do You Take?

We accept all major credit card, wire transfers, money orders and, if you have no other options, a paper check, provided you send it via courier (e.g. FedEx, UPS, DHL.) We are currently working on enabling payments via PayPal.

How Much Does It Cost To Enter?

All entries are $179 each, except for Blogs and Podcasts, which are just $29 (blogs and podcasts are generally personal, not-for-profit undertakings.)  If you submit 5 or more entries, you are also eligible for a 10% discount.

When Do I Find Out If I Won?

We will announce winners at the Hive Awards ceremony to be held as a part of SXSW Interactive on Friday, March 12th, 2010 at 8PM CST, at Red 7 in Austin, Texas

Who’s Judging This?

Our judges are all experts in their fields, chosen by our international advisory board . All judging is done online, so judges do not get a chance to influence each other.
